In honor of Black History Month, we are airing two of our award-winning documentaries Signpost to Freedom: The 1953 Baton Rouge Bus Boycott and Desegregation: A Dream Delayed on Monday starting at 8:00 pm.
 
Monday, February 21
Antiques Roadshow - 7:00 pm
Continues its visit to Memphis. They find a Tibetan wedding necklace from the 19th century. (I thought for sure someone would bring in a petrified version of one of Elvis' peanut butter and banana sandwiches.)
Signpost to Freedom - 8:00 pm
Tells the story of the eight-day boycott of the Baton Rouge bus system in 1953 to protest segregated seating. If you haven't seen it, I would highly recommend it. We have some exciting news about the documentary further down in this newsletter.
Desegregation: A Dream Delayed - 9:00 pm
Tells the story of the East Baton Rouge Parish desegregation lawsuit, the longest-running desegregation case in U.S. history which was finally settled a couple of years ago. Award-winning reporter John Camp tells the story.

BRITCOM CLUB TO HOLD EVENT ON MARCH 13

   BBC Americas Representative Julius Cain will be the guest speaker at the LPB Britcom Club event on March 13 from 3:00 - 5:00pm at the luxurious LPB auditorium.
   Julius will show some clips of upcoming shows and will also poll the audience to see if they think the BBC should release a show they have under consideration.
   We will have scones, tons of door prizes and maybe the return of "Bad Britcom Theatre" along with some other surprises. We have already come up with one skit for Bad Britcom Theatre but there may be a second one. Come dressed as your favorite Britcom character to enter the costume contest!
   The cost is only $5 for members of Friends and $10 for non-members. All the proceeds will go to operate the Club and help pay for Britcoms on LPB. 

  

LEGENDS TO BE HONORED ON APRIL 28

   Friends of LPB will honor five outstanding Louisianans at the annual Louisiana Legends Gala and Auction on April 28 at the new Louisiana State History Museum in Baton Rouge.
   The Legends will include former American Ambassador to the United Nations and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, former LSU football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel, former LSU Women's Basketball Coach Sue Gunter, Alexandria businessman and philanthropist Roy O. Martin, Jr., and Terrebonne businessman and philanthropist William Clifford Smith
   A New Orleans native, Young was one of the major forces in the Civil Rights Movement working with the Reverend Martin Luther King. After serving three terms as a Congressman from Georgia, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. by President Jimmy Carter in 1976.  He later served two terms as the mayor of Atlanta.
   Former LSU football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel led LSU to the national title in 1958 and barely missed winning a second title in 1959. His 46 victories coaching the Tigers is the third highest in LSU history. He later coached at Army and South Carolina before returning as Athletic Director at LSU from 1978-82.
   Roy O. Martin, Jr. of Alexandria is the former president and CEO of Roy O.Martin Lumber Management. He is a tireless fundraiser and philanthropist for many causes in Central Louisiana including the USO and Salvation Army.
   A 2000 inductee into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, former LSU Women's Basketball Coach Sue Gunter racked up a total of 708 wins during her career at Stephen F. Austin, Middle Tennessee State and LSU. That included a 442-221 record as coach at LSU. Gunter retired after last season because of health problems. .
   A native of New Orleans, William Clifford Smith is Chairman of the Board of the engineering firm of T. Baker Smith and Company located in Houma. In addition to making major contributions to Nicholls State University, Smith also serves on the State Board of Regents, the Board of Directors for the Entergy Corporation, Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce, Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society, and Mississippi River Commission.
   Sponsors for the Gala are Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson LLP, DSM Copolymer, Roy O. Martin Lumber Co., Nicholls State University Foundation, Our Lady of the Lake, Phelps Dunbar Law Firm and Deborah and Ned Randolph.
   This year's event will be held at the new State Museum in Downtown Baton Rouge. Tickets are $125 each or two for $225. Corporate sponsorships and tables are also available. SIGNPOST TO FREEDOM: THE 1953 BATON ROUGE BUS BOYCOTT SELECTED FOR SHOWING AT THE NEW YORK INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL

   LPB's Signpost to Freedom: The 1953 Baton Rouge Bus Boycott has been selected to be shown at the prestigious New York Independent Film Festival. The festival runs from April 28 - May 4.
   The New York International Film Festival is the largest independent film and video festival in the world. Signpost was selected for this honor from more than 5,000 entries.
   Produced and co-written by Christina Melton and shot and edited by Keith Crews, the documentary tells the story of the eight-day boycott of the Baton Rouge bus system by the African American citizens.  Charles Richard (Louisiana: A History) was the co-writer for the script and Grammy winner Chris Thomas King (O Brother, Where Art Thou) composed and performed the score.  
   The documentary included interviews with the boycott participants along with interviews with scholars who helped put the boycott's significance in perspective. Among the participants were former United Nations Ambassador and Civil Rights leader Andrew Young and National Public Radio Commentator Juan Williams, the author of Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years 1954-1965.
   The program will be aired later this year on PBS.

LOUISIANA ART & ARTIST GUILD HOLDING A WORKSHOP BY ARTIST TERRY MADDEN

   Terry Madden, the star of Terry Madden's Watercolor Workshop (Saturdays at 7:00 am on LPB), will be in Baton Rouge on Monday, March 7 through Wednesday, March 9 to conduct a watercolor workshop for the Louisiana Art & Artists Guild. The workshops will run from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm. This workshop is geared for all level students. Fees are $300 for Louisiana Art & Artists Guild members and $350 for non-members.
   The classes will be held at Cedarcrest Park, 2940 Silverest, Baton Rouge. For more information, contact Jessie Bourgoyne at (225) 927-3476.
